FINAL DESIGN PROJECT

This project was completed as an academic endeavour under Tashbox 7 in 2020. It spanned 8 weeks and was mentored by Lena Ragade Gupta.

Intent:

Domain Selection: Health

The aim was to use design knowledge to contribute to the health sector, focusing on overall well-being. The intent was to identify intervention areas aligned with my skills to enhance, make aware, elevate, or avail the overall well-being of individuals.

Research Insights

Health Definition: Research revealed that health is not just the absence of disease but a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. This holistic understanding guided the project's direction.

Key Issue Identified:

Anemia emerged as a silent epidemic, particularly affecting women and children in India. Statistics showed a worsening incidence across all states, highlighting the need for targeted interventions.

Objective:

Problem Statement

To design a systemic intervention in the health sector addressing anemia, considering its intergenerational cycle and the multiple stakeholders involved.

Interventions

Intervention 1: Clean Cooking Fuel

Problem Statement: The use of biomass, such as wood, as household cooking fuel in rural India contributes to anemia by impairing nutrient absorption.

Concept:

Introduce biomass briquettes made of sugarcane bagasse (a residue of sugarcane after sugar processing) as a non-toxic, clean fuel alternative. The briquettes are designed to be economical, accessible, and easily transportable, catering to the Indian context.

Concept:

Integrate iron and folic acid supplements into bindis, a daily ornament for many women, serving as a reminder to consume the supplements regularly.

Intervention 2:
Iron Supplement Consumption

Problem Statement:

Ensuring consistent consumption of iron supplements among women.

Concept:

Develop educational tools for grade 1 and 2 students to help them recognize iron-rich foods through color association and other engaging methods.

This project demonstrated a comprehensive approach to addressing anemia through design interventions targeting different stakeholders and aspects of the problem. By integrating sustainable practices, educational initiatives, and culturally relevant solutions, the project aimed to contribute significantly to the overall health and well-being of the affected population.
